Description
A Structured Approach to Effective Observations – CPD Course for Assessors
Develop the skills and confidence to plan, conduct, and review observations that produce valid, high-quality evidence — every time.
Course Overview
Observation is one of the most powerful tools in vocational assessment. But it’s also one of the most misused. When done well, it gives you real, compelling evidence of what a learner can do. No written assignment can match that. When done poorly, though, it wastes time, knocks learner confidence, and leaves you open to scrutiny during quality assurance.
That’s where this course comes in. In just one hour, you’ll get a clear, practical five-stage framework for carrying out professional observations. It takes you all the way from initial planning through to giving feedback. So whether you’re new to assessing or want to sharpen your existing skills, this course will help you observe in a way that is fair, consistent, and fit for purpose.
Who Is This Course For?
This course is ideal for anyone involved in vocational assessment. More specifically, it’s designed for:
- Assessors in any sector who use observations as part of their assessment process
- Internal Quality Assurers (IQAs) who oversee and standardise assessment across their organisation
- Trainers and vocational tutors who carry out workplace or practice-based assessments
- FE college staff and training providers delivering work-based qualifications
- New assessors working towards a qualification such as CAVA
What You Will Learn
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Use the five-stage framework — Plan, Brief, Observe, Question, Feedback — to structure every observation you carry out
- Plan observations properly, including choosing the right criteria, arranging a suitable context, and meeting health and safety requirements
- Run pre-assessment briefings that put learners at ease and set clear expectations
- Position yourself professionally so you can observe without getting in the way
- Know when to step in — and when to stay back — one of the most common areas where assessors go wrong
- Use video and audio recording in the right way when needed
- Ask effective questions that uncover what a learner understands, not just what they did
- Give honest, helpful feedback using the praise sandwich model
- Complete your observation records to the standard required by awarding bodies and quality assurance processes
Course Content
The course is split into six short, focused modules.
Module 1: Introduction to Observation as an Assessment Method First, we look at why observations matter in vocational assessment. We explore what makes them different from other methods. Then we introduce the five-stage framework that runs through the whole course.
Module 2: Planning and Preparation Next, we get into what good planning actually looks like. This includes reviewing criteria, talking to workplaces, and getting your paperwork ready. There’s also a reflection activity to help you think about your own current approach.
Module 3: Conducting Pre-Assessment Briefings After that, we look at the briefing. You’ll learn what to cover every time, why it matters more than most assessors realise, and how to handle tricky situations — like an anxious learner or a last-minute disclosure.
Module 4: Professional Observation Techniques Then we move into the observation itself. You’ll learn where to stand, how to take useful notes, and how to stay professional throughout. We also include a simple decision tree to help you decide when to step in.
Module 5: Assessment Questioning and Feedback Following on from the observation, we cover questioning and feedback. You’ll learn how to ask questions that get to the heart of what a learner knows. Then we look at how to deliver feedback that is honest, motivating, and clear — using the praise sandwich model. We also cover why you should never give a final decision during immediate feedback.
Module 6: Conclusion and Continuing Professional Development Finally, we bring everything together. You’ll recap the five-stage framework and think about how to keep your observation practice strong through ongoing CPD.
Why This Course Matters
The quality of your observations directly affects the quality of your assessment decisions. And ultimately, it affects the standard of the qualifications you award. Without a clear structure, it’s easy to miss important evidence, make inconsistent judgements, or fail to give learners the support they need.
This course gives you a proven framework based on best practice. As a result, you’ll be able to carry out observations you can stand behind — whether you’re talking to your IQA, your EQA, or your awarding body.
CPD and Qualification Relevance
This course is relevant to the following qualifications and professional standards:
- Award in Education and Training (AET)
- Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment (ACWE)
- Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA)
- Education and Training Foundation (ETF) Professional Standards
- Ofsted inspection readiness for assessment quality
Completing this course gives you one hour of verifiable CPD. You can log this straight away towards your continuing professional development record.
